The Balvenie DoubleWood 12, launched in 1993, is a masterpiece of wood finishing created by Malt Master David Stewart in 1982. After at least 12 years in bourbon barrels and hogsheads, the whisky is transferred to sherry casks for an additional nine months. The process is completed in oak tuns for 3-4 months to allow the whiskies to marry harmoniously, resulting in a single malt whisky with a unique character and depth of flavour.

David Stewart (MBE), the Malt Master at Balvenie, has worked at the distillery for over 50 years. It must be quite remarkable for him to bottle a Balvenie 40 year old, which was filled in to casks when he was just through his first 10 years at the distillery. Bottled at a cask strength of 42.2%, this is a special dram that shows warming spice with layers of honeyed oak and rich fruit.
